Set-up and Finish are Important

Set-up and finish

In golf, it is tempting to try to fix your whole swing all at once. When you have a rough day on the course it seems natural to go to the range and cycle through about 10 swing-thoughts while trying to fix all of your perceived swing flaws. However this is not a process that will lead to long term success.

A process that will lead to long term success focuses more on setting up to the ball correctly and finishing each swing correctly. When you put more emphasis on the set-up and finish you will find that the other moving parts of your swing will get better automatically.

When I am practicing, I constantly ask myself the following 4 questions about my set-up and finish: (Click on each question to see correct answers.)

1. Are my shoulders square to the target line?

2. Is my knee flex and posture correct?

3. Am I balanced at address?

4. Am I making a complete finish?

Next time you find yourself going to the range to fix your swing, make sure to spend most of your time perfecting your set-up and finish!
