• A Steady Head is Key to Consistency

If I ever start hitting the ball poorly, I always check to see what my head is doing while I swing. On the back-swing and down-swing, a steady head is key to consistency when it comes to my ball-striking.

This fundamental applies to every swing from the full shot all the way down to a little chip shot. In the pictures below, I am hitting a 60 yard pitch shot.

My head is inside the yellow box at the start of the takeawayOn the start of the take-away my head does not move up, down or side to side.

My head is inside the yellow box on the backswing As I’m taking the club back, notice that my head is still in the yellow box.

My head is inside the yellow box on the down-swing

On the down-swing, my head drops ever so slightly because of the lateral drive of my hips moving out from under my head toward the target.

My head is inside the yellow box just after impactThrough impact my head stays put.

My right shoulder brings my head up after impactAfter impact, my right shoulder comes through and naturally brings my head up…

I finish looking directly at the target…All the way to my finish position.

If you are hitting the ball poorly and you know your set-up and finish positions are correct; check to see what your head is up to during your swing. (Read more about the set-up here.)
