Overview: Golf Club of Estrella is a Gary Nicklaus designed golf course with lots of bunkers and a challenging finish: The final four holes are near and on the side of a mountain, and you have to hit really good tee shots to keep the ball in play. Also, the course is tricky because the greens are fast and grainy and it plays about 7,100 yards. The first day it was windy and a little cool. The second day we had perfect weather in the 80’s.
Day 1:
#2 Driver down middle of fairway, then 8-iron to 3 feet from 165 yards. Made the 3 footer for birdie.
#8 Driver down the middle of the fairway, then laid up with a 6-iron to 80 yards. From there I hit a lob wedge to 15 feet and made the putt for birdie.
Day 2:
#1 Driver down the middle of the fairway to 75 yards. From there I hit a lob wedge to 5 feet and made the putt for birdie.
#4 Driver, 3-wood to 25 yards short of the green. Then I holed out the pitch shot for eagle.
# 10 Driver down the middle of the fairway. Then pitching wedge from 130 yards to 10 feet and made the putt for birdie.
Positives: I had the second lowest score on day 2. Also, I am making a full shoulder turn on the backswing and I do not have any pain in my shoulder at all! I was able to hit 60 full shots after each round on the range.
Areas to improve: Add fairway bunker shots into my practice routine. I learned from day one to day two that on really bumpy, fast greens it’s better to just try to trickle the ball in the hole instead of running it in the hole like in my last tournament on the smooth greens at the Legacy.
