Today was my first competitive round on a full size course in over a year. I am back to swinging full speed with no pain! I have been rehabbing my shoulder since surgery on March 28th, 2014, and over the last month I have slowly been working back to the full swing.
I am very thankful to be getting to play golf again! Here’s how I did today at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix:
Overview: The golf course was in great shape today and the weather was perfect at about 70 degrees and sunny. The greens were rolling nice and fast.
On #7, I hit driver, 8-iron from 161 yards to 6 inches and made an easy birdie
On #9, I hit driver into the right rough. From there I had 280 yards around a tree to the flag. I hit a high 3-wood around the tree that got too high up in the air and faded about 60 yards to the right. The ball landed on the upslope in front of the green and rolled back into the water. However, my ball was only halfway submerged, so I took off my right shoe, and got in the water and hit an explosion shot with my pitching wedge out to 15′ from 40 yards. I made that putt for birdie.
Positives: I stuck to my mental routine and did the best I could on every shot. Also, I had 11 good opportunities for birdies. I was 2 for 2 getting up and down out of greenside sand traps today.
Areas to Improve: I will stay more committed during all of my swings in the future. I was totally committed on about 70% of my swings today. Also, I had 5 simple up and down opportunities that I did not capitalize on. I will stay committed and hit those chip shots closer to the hole in the future.
Practice this week: I will stick with my practice plan that I have in place and work on holing every chip and pitch around the green, instead of working too mechanically.
