If you’ve been a golfer for very long, I’m sure you have learned that “how” you practice is just as important as “what” you practice. Learning the right fundamentals is important, but you also need to have structure when you go to practice. Here are a couple drills that work for me and help to keep my putting sharp.
Circle Drill: In this drill you will hit a certain number of three foot putts with the goal of making 97% of them. I like to putt 100 at a time. I set the drill up by evenly placing five golf tees in a three foot radius around a hole on the practice green. I measure the distance from the hole by using my putter length. Then I place a golf ball by each tee and start making putts in sets of five. What I like about this drill is that it really shows if you are able to focus well while doing many repetitions.
Ladder Drill: I make sure to perform this drill when the practice green is relatively empty of people, because it can take quite a bit of space. I take about 30 golf balls and place them in a line with about two feet between each ball. The line should start with a ball two feet from the hole and the last ball in the line should be about 60 feet from the cup. Once you have the drill set up, start with the two foot putt. After you hit each putt step back to the next ball and fairly quickly strike the next putt. I like to clear my mind and not consciously think about speed or direction. I just hit the balls at the hole and let my subconscious mind figure out the direction and distance control.
These two drills are the foundation of my putting practice routine. They have helped me gain confidence on the course and I know that they can help you too!
