Overview: Talking Stick is a relatively long course with only two par 5’s. It’s interesting because there are a few holes that have an out-of-bounds fence running along the left side of the fairway. The fairways and greens are very firm, and all of the grass besides the greens is mowed at fairway height. So there is no tall grass along the fairways, just desert.
Learning Opportunities:
The first day, the wind picked up and it was really tricky in the afternoon with the wind direction shifting. I hit a few irons shots that flew the green because I didn’t take enough time in the planning stage of my routine to factor in the wind and miss in a good spot. Next tournament, I will take a little more time to plan when the wind is hard to judge.
Positives: I only missed 4 fairways the whole week and averaged 13 greens in regulation per round. Also, other than a 4 putt on number 11 the second day, I putted consistently.
Areas to improve: Taking a little more time to plan my shots and also making more putts will help. I’ll keep practicing putting and be ready for the next tournament.
WOW, fantastic consistency! I can now brag about my coach. Have a great time with your family and parents. Tell your dad & mom hello.
We’ll see you in September.
Bill
Ha ha, thanks Bill! I’ll tell them hi. Have a great summer and I’ll be looking forward to seeing you in September,
Grant
Hi Grant: Congratulations on your fine performance at the Scottsdale Open. Two 71’s and a 67 are quite impressive. Your six birdies in Round 2 is outstanding. Keep up the great work. Have a great summer. See you this fall. SID OVERTON
Thanks so much Sid. Hope you and Karen have a great summer!

great play Grant. especially day 2. Wow 6 birdies. your mental approach and discipline are great. I know when I work with you I get results and it shows. I want to set up some sessions with you again because I know you better and trust what your saying.
I recently have played a number of rounds at Coronado 9 hole course. it is a low quality course but very nice people, fun and 3 par 4’s I can drive if everything works. Any way you have to get the ball in the hole no mater what condition a course in. that’s the challenge. I shoot par quite often and a few minus 1’s.
I’m staying limber and strong. recently learned two good things. one is to keep the club in front of me more not around. And follow through with the lifting up and away of the left shoulder. don’t slide. you get more speed. And slow everything down, it will speed up on its own. Have a great summer with the family. God bless all and if you ask for it you will probably get it !! Best, John Reilly.
Thanks John! Great to hear from you, glad you are getting to play some golf and staying in shape! Sounds like you are playing great and those are some great swing thoughts. I’ll look forward to seeing you in the fall,
Grant
