I played the Firecracker Open in Lawton, OK, the Waterloo Open in Waterloo, Iowa, and the Monday Qualifier for the Korn Ferry Tour in Springfield Missouri this past month.
I shot 73, 75, 66 in the Firecracker Open for 5th place. Then 72, 69 in the Waterloo Open and missed the cut. Then I shot 71 in the Monday Qualifier for the Korn Ferry Tour placing 45th out of 114 players. I missed qualifying by 5 shots as only the top 8 to advanced to the tournament.
It had been 7 months since I played a tournament and I could feel my game getting back in shape the more holes I played under tournament pressure. I’m really close to shooting low scores and can’t wait for my next tournament.
In the second round on the 17th hole of the Waterloo Open my ball went in the hole for a hole-in-one! It was a surreal experience to see the ball disappear in the hole. And my son was caddying so I got to share that experience with him.
Another shot to remember was on the 14th hole in Missouri: I hit a 3 iron from 255 yards that finished about 6 inches short of going in for a double eagle. That lead to an easy tap-in eagle.
A big key to my consistent play has been improved breathing and relaxing before each shot. I’m feeling more and more confident that I can clear my mind even under the highest pressure and let my subconscious take over during the swing.
Another part of my game that I have been focusing on is committing to the yardage I feel the shot is going to play after factoring in the wind and change of elevation. And then I commit 100% to the club that I choose.
Below is a picture of a card I carry with me with standard club distances from my 60 degree going 100 yards all the way down to my driver going 300 yards.
I’m looking forward to playing the Oklahoma Open at the end of August and then Q-School for the Korn Ferry Tour this fall. I’m raising money to go to Q-School and to play more professional tournaments in 2022.
