• Where is Your Focus?

DownswingI am working hard on my focusing ability in tournament play. Through past experience, I know that focusing on each shot individually is my key to shooting really low scores. However, focusing intensely on the shot at hand is easier said than done.

When I am totally focused, I really enjoy the process and feeling of each shot instead of thinking about the possibilities that could happen as a result of each shot. So, for me to focus properly, I have to enjoy what I am doing before I can focus. And the only way I can truly enjoy what I am doing is to approach each tournament thanking God that I have the opportunity to play.

It’s very interesting how this truth parallels every day life. For example, when I am on a road trip with my wife, Jeree, I can choose to focus on the fact that the trip is taking forever and that I can’t stand up for another two hours. Or I can enjoy each minute of that trip talking to Jeree, and being thankful for the time together. Which way is easier, especially when you are tired? Which way do you think is more productive?  It seems obvious looking in from the outside doesn’t it?

In the same way it seems obvious that you should enjoy each shot on the golf course. However, in the heat of the moment, it is very easy to slip into the wrong attitude which ends up hindering your ability to perform at your highest level. Colossians 3:17 says:  “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”

I hope this truth encourages you like it encourages me. Enjoying the process and being thankful for opportunities will allow you to focus on what really matters, and what really matters is glorifying God.
