A great swing that’s pointed in the wrong direction is a bad shot. Training to align properly is a skill that doesn’t come naturally; most right-handed golfers tend to aim too far left with their shoulders and too far right with their feet at address.
To break these bad alignment habits, you can use a simple alignment aid that almost all golfers have hanging on their bag: A golf towel.
1. Fold the towel into a rectangle that can fit between your feet and the golf ball.
2. Position one edge of the towel parallel to your target line and about 3 inches away from the ball.
3. Set up to the ball and use the opposite edge of the towel to align your shoulders parallel to the target.
Having two parallel lines (the edges of the towel), one pointing at the target and the other pointing parallel left of the target, will quickly help your mind grasp what it means to align correctly.
Using a towel to check your alignment is especially helpful when you are practicing draws and fades. When trying to curve the ball, always remember to set up parallel to the line you want the ball to start on… not where you want the ball to end up.
