• Long Putts: How much wrist action is right for you?

When it comes to long putts (60 to 100 feet), I have found that using a little wrist action helps me hit the ball in the center of the club-face every time.

Long Putt Wrist on backswing linesIn the picture above I am using some wrist action on my back-swing for an uphill 90 footer. And, in the picture below, I am hitting the same putt with no wrist action on the back-swing.Long Putt No Wrist Backswing linesWhen I don’t use any wrists, I have to take a bigger shoulder turn, and the putter face has to travel a long way away from the ball at the top of the back-swing. Depending on your skill level, this big back-swing can make it hard to make solid contact every time.

Figuring out how much wrist action to use on your long putts takes practice. I recommend using the ladder drill (link to drill here) from 60 to 100 feet while learning how to increase your wrist action gradually as you back farther from the hole.

This concept has sure helped me on my long putts and I know it can help you!
