I want to have an easy-going attitude when I putt, and a calm, calculated reaction even if the putt doesn’t go in. If I have been missing putts, the first thing I check is my attitude. Trying to post low tournament scores can lead to a build-up of stress and tension. On the putting green, this stress usually comes from worrying too much about the outcome of the putt instead of just making my best stroke.
If I notice tension is building from missing putts, I focus on what will allow me to make my best stroke: Freedom is most important. I am free to relax, free to enjoy, and free to make or miss the putt. Yes, I want to make every putt, but my main goal is just to make my best stroke on every putt. If I make my best stroke, I will make more putts! And, the way to make my best stroke is to putt freely with a good attitude even if I haven’t been making very many putts lately.
There will be days when the ball goes in the hole and days that the ball does not go in as often. But, if I focus on my attitude and reaction, I will have more good days on the greens!
