After setting up to a putt, I take one last look at the hole, then look back at the ball and then stroke the putt immediately. Taking one last look focuses my mind on how the ball should roll to make the putt.
Many golfers stand over the ball staring at it before starting their backswing. If you stare at the ball too long before stroking your putts, you give random thoughts time to enter your mind. “This putt is for birdie” or “I hit my last putt too hard, so I better hit this one softer” are examples of thoughts that have entered my mind when I stand over the ball too long.
Next time you are playing on the course, check to see how much time you are spending looking at the ball before you stroke your putts. If you have been taking too long over the ball, just work on taking one last look before you stroke your putts. This simple fundamental will definitely improve your scores!
