Overview: Another perfect day for golf in AZ. The course was in great condition and it was fun to be back at Papago for the first time in over a year. This was my second round in a row without a bogey. My ball striking was very good with lots of birdie attempts and no 3-putts. Putting was also good, I just didn’t read the putts very well and had a bunch of two-putts. I missed winning by two shots and parring the par 5’s is what really hurt my score today.
Highlites:
#2. Driver into the right rough. Then from 105 yards I hit sand wedge to 4 feet and made the putt for birdie.
#4. Hit a 4-iron from 227 uphill to 10 feet and two-putted for par.
#11. Hit a 7-iron from 188 to 12 feet and 2-putted for par.
#17. Hit a 4-iron from 238 to 10 feet and 2-putted for par.
#18. Hit driver down the middle, then a 7-iron from 191 yards to 10 feet and 2-putted for par
Learning Opportunities:
Par 5’s: On numbers 1, 9 and 10, after my tee shots, I had awkward lies that made my second shots much harder. I will practice hitting my long clubs out of bad lies.
Positives: Every part of my game was solid. It was just an interesting day where I had to stay patient as I lipped out a lot of putts. The great thing is that I hit the ball as well as I ever have. My driver was going straight and far and my iron and wedge shots were solid.
Areas to improve: Reading the greens: Just need to play the course a little more to remember how the putts break. There’s a big valley affect that makes it tricky. Also, the pin positions were tough today and it was a great learning opportunity to putt to those difficult hole positions.
