Overview: It was a great 3 days of golf! Skyline CC is a really tricky layout that is on the side of a mountain in north Tucson. It has out-of-bounds lining both sides of about every fairway and the greens have lots of slope. It was my second tournament of the year, so it was a great experience even though I didn’t score as well as I would have liked to.
Highlights:
Hole #5, Day 1: I hit my 3-hybrid off the tee and left myself 220 yards to the green. Then I hit 4-iron to just in front of the green and chipped in for eagle from about 15 yards.
Hole #5, Day 2: 3-hybrid off the tee and then had 210 into the green. I ht a 4-iron to just in front of the green and then chipped to a few inches for an easy birdie.
Hole #10, Day 2: I hit 3-iron off of the tee to just in front of the green. Then chipped to 2 feet and made the putt for birdie.
Hole #15, Day 2: Driver to 172 yards from the flag. Then I hit 8-iron to 6 inches for an easy tap-in birdie.
Hole #5, Day 3: 3-hybrid to 196 yards. Then hit 6-iron to 5 feet and two putted for birdie.
Hole #8, Day 3: Driver into left rough. Then 3-iron to 62 yards in front of the green. From there I hit lob wedge to 5 feet and made the putt for birdie.
Hole #18, Day 3: 4-iron off the tee and then laid up with a 7- iron to 96 yards. From there I hit sand wedge to 7 feet and made the putt for birdie.
Positives: I stuck to my plan on every tee shot and hit 85% of the fairways and 70% of the greens. Even after making a 9 on the back nine of the last day, I just kept with my game plan and stuck to my process on every shot. My game actually was not that far off, I can just tell that I need to play more tournament rounds to get my scoring to match my ball-striking.
Areas to improve: Putting. I usually like to have 29 or fewer putts per round so I lost 15 shots on the greens over the three days. I will do my pull-back putting game more before my next tournament so that I will get my confidence up. I’m definitely still figuring out the balance between teaching, practicing and playing and I can tell that I need to focus a little more on practicing my putting under pressure. As I always say, I learn the most from the toughest experiences, so even though my putting was off, I will come back stronger from what I learned in this tournament.
